What score do you need to pass the EPA 608?

Seventy percent is the EPA 608 passing score on the proctored, closed-book tests; the one exception is a mail-in Type I test, which needs 84%.

Pass mark

The federal rule sets 70% for closed-book Type I, Type II, Type III and Universal tests and 84% for a mail-in Type I test. ESCO Institute applies the 70% to each 25-question section, which means 18 correct out of 25 there.

Seven misses per section, at ESCO

Eighteen out of 25 leaves room for seven wrong answers in each section. The night before a test that can look like a thin margin, and feeling that way is no evidence you started too late; it's what a pass line looks like up close.

The margin grows fastest on rules that come with numbers: evacuation levels, the 80% cylinder fill, leak-rate thresholds, the recovery percentages for small appliances. A memorized table is simply right or wrong, which makes those points the cheapest to secure. Core comes first, because at ESCO no type counts without it: start with the Core section guide, and check how many questions each EPA 608 test has so you know what you're pacing.

If the calendar is the worry, an EPA 608 study plan for 4, 8 or 12 weeks spreads the four sections so none of them gets only the last evening.

Key takeaways

  • 70% on closed-book tests, 84% on a mail-in Type I (40 CFR 82, Appendix D (e), eCFR as of October 5, 2026).
  • At ESCO: 18 of 25 in every section you take, with Core required.
  • A failed section at ESCO is retaken on its own and passed sections stay passed; other programs bundle attempts instead, compared on EPA 608 retake rules by program.

How the score is read

Is the score reported per section or as one number?

That depends on the program. ESCO grades each section and needs 18 of 25 in each; SkillCat's FAQ describes a 70% total (ESCO exam page and SkillCat FAQ, checked October 7, 2026).

Why does the mail-in Type I need 84%?

Appendix D sets 84% for the mail-in format, which is open-book, and 70% for closed-book tests. The rule gives no reason; the higher bar is simply the cost of having the book open (40 CFR 82, Appendix D (e), eCFR as of October 5, 2026).
